Quick Facts
My essential question was basically the essence of what I hoped to gain from my mentorship at United Rentals.

The important information found within this source mainly concerns the growth of the critical power industry and how the Internet of things (IoT) is revolutionizing lives. The article discusses the impending opportunity stemming from the growth of technology and directly relates to my capstone project due to the statistics it offers supporting growth within the industry. Basically, our digital world is undergoing an era of transformation, because everything is becoming digitized and interconnected. Soon enough, everything that is electronic will process some form of data and artificial intelligence (AI) that will be reported back to local data centers, explaining as to why the huge demand for jobs in data centers and in the critical power industry as a whole have surged. Spending from big business and government is predicted to steadily increase as years move forward, creating endless opportunity. A potential quote includes the statistic, “The global IoT market will grow from $157B in 2016 to $457B by 2020, attaining a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 28.5%” (Enterprise Irregulars). This source is credible, because this website offers exposés on business growth in this industry as well as others. The article is credible because it portrays explicit facts and mathematical predictions/statistics that have been referenced, rather than making broad blanket statements about how much an industry is going to grow. This website and specific article offers irrefutable evidence of the predicted growth of the technological industry. I can use this information in order to discuss how the growth of the industry affects our everyday lives. Not only does it provide tremendous job-growth opportunity, but it also forces our population to open their eyes to an inevitable near future when anything and everything will be interconnected and data will be stored about an individual in databases.

My research question for my Capstone project remains the same. What I am currently working on is the synthesis of the research I've done and the experiences I have had. Up to this point, I have completed bits and pieces of research through my annotated bib and undergone weekly experience with my mentor, however, I want to focus on how to relate the two in order to construct an excellent capstone project. The first step I am taking is asking myself what the significance of my experience at United Rentals has been. I think once I evaluate this I will be able to start forming the necessary connection between my research and experience. I would also love to further develop the real inquiry portion of my capstone project by asking my mentor more questions about the career field. I have already asked him the ten interview questions I previously had formulated, however, I want to learn more about how he thinks the industry is growing and his vision for what it could become. Overall, I would say I have a good baseline for my capstone project, but I would like to further advance my research.
Bearn, Paul. "Specifying, App'Ying Load-Bank Systems." Consulting-Specifying Engineer, vol. 49, no. 2, Mar. 2012, pp. 2-5. EBSCOhost, proxygsu-sfor.galileo.usg.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspxdirect=true&db=bth&AN=90287233&site=eds-live&scope=site. The pertinent information from this academic journal is found on page four, when load bank options are discussed. There are basically four configurations of load banks that can be used to test backup power: portable, radiator mounted, permanent, and rack-mounted. Basically these types of configurations can be used to test generators in any given situation, whether it be and emergency or a routine test. There are multiple advantages and disadvantages to using each type of load bank, which would be further discussed in my paper. A potential quote that I can utilize is when the author states, "“Combinations of these load-bank types and configurations may be used. For example, a resistive load bank may be permanently installed with a tap box to facilitate the occasional connection of a portable inductive load bank." (Bearn). The reason why this source is credible is because it is an academic journal that was written by a professional (engineer) whose forte is this industry. It is a factual article rather than a biased and opinionated excerpt, which will allow analyze the source from multiple unbiased lenses. I can use this information to further support and back up my supposition that backup power is crucial to our society. It gives a specific example of the mechanisms that can be used to test generators in companies such as United Rentals.
What is driving my research is just my basic hunger for knowledge. To be honest, I did not anticipate having a large interest in electrical engineering, but after conducting research and talking to professionals within the industry, I realized that this pathway could be a viable career suited for me. My research question has not changed and continues to be: How does my understanding of the application of critical power solutions from United Rentals facilitate facets of everyday life and the efficiency of our surrounding environment? I would love to publish a brochure/ pamphlet and establish something that the company could actually make use of. I would also like to set up some kind of computer program that allows for me to get in touch with the network of people that I have met throughout this experience in an effective manner. Honestly, I don't have a concrete plan for what I will gear my real inquiry towards yet, however, the goal surrounding the majority of the research that my mentor and I are completing is to find an efficient way to educated employees of United Rentals in how the Power/HVAC sector is important and what employees can do to stay involved. We are hoping that by attempting to spread the importance of this industry that a new emphasis on critical power can be enacted.

I had previous knowledge and a basic idea of what electrical engineers did and what kind of tasks they undertook, but through my mentorship, my mentor has worked hard in order to exemplify that electrical engineering involves much more than just crunching numbers and learning about generators. I feel as though my mentor has taught me information about the field, however, in another perspective I believe that I have taught my mentor about my generation. I hope to serve as a positive example that my generation is willing to work hard and to absorb knowledge so that we can be future leaders of all industries whether it be electrical engineering or not. The main goal that I have met so far is to learn more about United Rentals as a whole and what the company encompasses. United Rentals impacts our everyday lives in through indirect means, which I found to be very interesting. Some goals that I previously made had to be adjusted and reeled back somewhat, just due to extremely busy schedules on both my and my mentor's end. We now understand that we can't make it out to data centers or events every single week but rather more sporadically. What I mainly have done to make my supervisor's life easier is sometimes run papers back and fourth or compute calculations for him as he describes to me what kind of projects he is working on.
